Jump hosts

A jump host, also called a bastion, is a server that is reachable from the internet and that can reach other servers on a private network. Portway connects to the jump host first and then continues to the target server through it. The behavior is the same as ssh -J.

  1. Save the jump host as an ordinary server and connect to it once directly.
  2. Open the form of the target server, or add it as a new server.
  3. In Connect via (jump host), choose an account of the saved jump host. The default is None, connect directly.
  4. Enter the host and port of the target as they are seen from the jump host. This can be a private address that only the jump host can reach.
  5. Save the server and connect.

The form shows the equivalent ssh command, which includes the jump host.

  • The jump host must have been connected directly at least once, so that its host key is trusted and, when the account uses a password or a passphrase, so that the secret can be saved in the Keychain. Without this step, Portway reports that the host key of the jump host is not trusted or that a secret is missing, and asks for a direct connection first.
  • The sshd of the jump host must allow TCP forwarding (AllowTcpForwarding).
  • The host and port of the target must be correct as seen from the jump host.

A chain of jump hosts may not loop back to the server itself, and a chain that is too long is refused. The error message names the servers whose Connect via setting should be checked.

The connection to the jump host is stored inside the session of the target. When the session is dropped, the whole chain is dropped. Tunnels and other features use the same route.
